The charming community of Kellogg, Idaho in the Silver Valley of the Bitterroot mountains within the Idaho Panhandle.

• Location and Geography:
  • Kellogg lies near the Coeur d’Alene National Forest and is approximately 36 miles (58 km) east-southeast of Coeur d’Alene along Interstate 90.
  • The city is nestled in a pristine 2,600-square-mile playground surrounded by natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

• History:
  • Kellogg was incorporated in 1907 and owes its name to a prospector named Noah Kellogg.
  • The city became a center of mining for silver, and nearly a century of mine operations produced a significant amount of this precious metal.
  • However, disputes between union miners and mine owners were common as workers sought better conditions, including improved wages and safety.
  • Unfortunately, with declining yields, the Bunker Hill Mine (and its smelter) closed in 1981, resulting in job losses and regional lead contamination of water and soil.
  • Despite these challenges, Kellogg has transformed into a resort town, capitalizing on its mountainous terrain for activities like skiing and more.

• Silver Mountain Resort:
  • The Silver Mountain Resort is an alpine ski area that includes Kellogg Peak at 6,297 feet (1,919 m) and Wardner Peak at 6,200 feet (1,890 m).
  • Access to the resort is via the world’s longest single-cabin gondola, which covers a 3.1-mile (5.0 km) track from the city of Kellogg.
  • The resort offers a range of amenities, including condos, hotels, restaurants, shops, and even a water park.
  • Additionally, a golf coursecomplements the recreational offerings.

• Sunshine Mine Tragedy:
  • In May 1972, the Sunshine Mine in Kellogg witnessed one of the worst U.S. mining accidents.
  • A fire broke out, resulting in the tragic deaths of 91 miners.
  • The incident left a lasting impact on the community and serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with mining.
