Blazons of England - Z
This alphabetical index brings together 17 English-linked family entries under surnames beginning with Z in Sir Bernard Burke’s The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, 1884 edition. It covers identifiable English-linked entries in the main Z section and the supplement.
Separate branches, variant spellings and supplementary entries are retained. The locality or family description identifies the particular entry; a repeated surname may have several different coats of arms.
Scope and transcription: This index includes entries with an identifiable English locality, English branch, or English title or office. Entries identified only with Scotland, Ireland, Wales or another country, civic and corporate arms, and unlocated entries without an established English connection are excluded. This is an index of identifiable English-linked entries; unlocated entries have not been assigned a nationality. Historical county names and titles refer to the source’s period.
Shield blazons are transcribed with standard heraldic abbreviations expanded. Brief branch labels replace lengthy pedigrees; crests, supporters, mottoes and most genealogical narratives are not reproduced. Explicit “same arms” references are expanded where their referent is clear; branch-specific changes are stated in labelled notes beside the base blazon. Editorial explanations and unresolved cross-references are identified. Details omitted by the printed source have not been invented, and unclear passages are marked where they cannot be reliably read. Coats of arms refer to particular armigerous families and branches, rather than everyone who shares a surname.
