Blazons of Germany - Z

This alphabetical index brings together 295 German-linked shield entries under 260 surname and branch headings beginning with Z in Johannes Baptista Rietstap’s Armorial Général, second edition, volume II. The French blazons are presented in English with heraldic abbreviations expanded.

Separate branches, variant spellings and distinct versions of the arms are retained. Each locality or branch label identifies the particular entry; a repeated surname can have several different coats of arms.

Scope: This collection includes entries labelled Germany and entries linked to historical German states and regions, including Bavaria, Saxony, Hesse, Baden, Prussia, Pomerania, Silesia and the Rhine Province. Historical regional labels are retained and do not imply that every place lies within modern Germany, or that every listed family had the same nationality. Families with connections to more than one country retain those connections where recorded. Entries located solely in Austria, Switzerland or other countries are excluded.

Transcription: These are shield blazons; crests, helmets, mantling, supporters and most genealogical details are omitted, as in our England series. Abbreviations such as gu., arg. and sa. are written as gules, argent and sable; Ec. becomes quarterly. Clear references to colours already named are expanded. Missing tinctures are identified rather than supplied. Entries consisting only of unresolved references to another family’s arms are outside this shield-description collection. Arms relate to particular armigerous families and branches, rather than everyone sharing a surname.

Source: Rietstap, Armorial Général, second edition, volume II: digitised original. Each entry links to its original page scan. The Germany–Holland Zimmermann entry is from the appendix. The Enquerre Rietstap index was used as a finding aid; unclear readings and broken entries were checked against the printed pages.
